Giovanni Diodati (June 6, 1576 - October 3, 1649), born at Geneve Switzerland of a noble family, was the first to translate the Bible into Italian from Hebrew and Greek sources. He was a devout Calvinist who completed his translation in 1603, then edited it with notes by 1607.
He was nominated professor of Hebrew at Geneva on the recommendation of Theodore Beza at the age of twenty-one and later became professor of theology. In 1608 he became a parish minister, at Geneva, and in the following year he succeeded Beza as professor of theology.
