Martin Luther rendered a New Testament from the original sources while at the Wartburg in 1521 and it made an appearance in 1522 as Das Newe Testament Deutszsch. The Old Testament was translated from the Hebrew and was published in installments.

Luther's German Bible was completed in 1534. Luther's Bible owes its exceptional influence to the fact that Luther went back to the original sources and that it was written in a way that is true to the original meaning and yet easy for all readers to understand. Revised versions appeared in 1892,1912 and 1956-64.

This edition of the Luther 1912 includes numerous Footnotes.
