The Holy Bible: New International Version® (NIV) is a completely new translation of the Bible into contemporary English. Over one hundred scholars worked from the best available Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek texts intent on faithful communication of the meaning of the original writers. The resultant work is a balance of word-for-word faithfulness with thought-for-thought sensitivity in readable prose suitable for private and public reading.

The chief goal of every revision to the NIV text is to bring the translation into line both with contemporary biblical scholarship and with shifts in English idiom and usage. The majority of what has changed involves comparatively minor matters of vocabulary, sentence structure and punctuation: changes that move the NIV from the English of 1984 to the English of today. Other changes are more substantive, reflecting the advances in biblical scholarship over the last three decades.
